Beat the Hunch · Five new names daily
Can you price a domain better than a hunch?
Five names that really sold. Price each one, then see the recorded sale next to two rivals: the Hunch, a price named from memory with no data behind it, and this site’s engine, which priced each name without seeing its sale. The figure closest to the sale wins the name. A new five every day at 00:00 UTC.
Today’s five names appear here when the page opens in a browser.
A new five every day at 00:00 UTC, the same five for everyone.
How the round works
- Everyone gets the same five names on the same UTC day, picked in a fixed order from 218 recorded sales, so no name repeats until all of them have been played.
- After each guess you see three figures: yours, the Hunch’s and this site’s engine’s. Each is scored by how many times off the recorded sale it was, whether too high or too low. The smallest wins the name.
- Your result is a grid of squares, one per name: green within 2x of the sale, yellow within 5x, white further off. It never shows a name or a price, so sharing it spoils nothing.
- Your streak and today’s guesses stay in this browser only.
Where the numbers come from
- Recorded sales: sales reported by DNJournal and Sedo, kept out of the corpus the engine draws its evidence from. The same 218-name blind holdout is published row by row at /predictions/, so the answers can be looked up. The game is for fun, not a test.
- The Hunch: a general-purpose chat assistant answering from memory, with no sales data or tools. Each name was asked for a single dollar figure with no sale price given, all 218 in one batch on 2026-09-30. Self-reported, not witnessed. Across all 218 names it landed within 2x of the sale on 10.55%. Full scoring at /accuracy/assistants/.
- The engine: this site’s deterministic valuation, run with each name’s own sale withheld from its evidence (methodology revision 4.18). Across the same 218 names it landed within 2x on 31.65%.
